Preservation Effort Update

Preservation Update : The Sausalito building that used to house The Plant Studios has been placed on the market for $4,000,000.

Based upon lack of interest from the community, evidenced by lack of response to our 2011 Pledge for Preservation campaign, we have decided to place our efforts to preserve this building on hold for now.

On a more positive note, please remember that The Plant Studios is a business, not a building. We continue the tradition of producing great music in the Bay Area. The Artsboretum project will continue to support music artists in the Bay Area and beyond, as well as provide free and low cost opportunities for artists of all genres to network and collaborate.

Additionally, our team continues our philanthropic contributions to the community through the non-profit project : A VEHICLE FOR CHANGE.

There are many "rumours" going around about the space formerly known at The Plant Studios - we continue to receive many inquiries from people regarding the fate of the building where amazing music was created - is it destined for destruction?
The music industry continues to shift dramatically, the mainstream does not seem to need or want large studios to make music these days. Some say that the loss of the craft of recording is to blame. Some say that lack of music education in our schools is to blame. Some blame the internet.
Whatever the cause for the decine in recorded music sales, the truth of the matter is, a multi room recording complex does not make much business sense in Marin County. But should we sit idly by, while a priceless landmark of our cultural legacy vanishes from our landscape? Just because IKEA makes cheap DIY furniture, does that mean hand built, finely crafted cabinets have no place in our world?
Many successful artists now build their own studios, our local creative workforce continues to struggle to make ends meet, some have moved to areas with a lower cost of living and more opportunity for employment.
The Artsboretum plan calls for a purchase of the building and a restoration of creative commerce to this unique space, for worthy causes. The Artsboretum will create jobs and stimulate our local economy.
If you would like to see this landmark preserved, join the effort to purchase The Plant's former location in Sausalito and restore it to a purpose worthy of its rich music legacy : The Artsboretum : a non-profit music arts incubator / center for conscious, creative collaboration.

"Tuesdays are Bluesdays" at The Belrose in San Rafael!

The Plant Studios hosts "Tuesdays are Bluesdays" at The Belrose in San Rafael!

Why? To celebrate American roots music, demonstrate how all rock is rooted in the blues, to keep musicians working and playing in our community and to help the Belrose sustain its rep as the coolest little theatre in Marin!
Here's how it usually plays out : every week, starting at 7:00, the house band, Livin' Like Kings learns a new tune, then at 8:00, we open the doors to let in our friends in on the rest of rehearsal - at 9:00 the band plays a short set then, Arne Frager (bass player/bandleader) hand picks a local musician to join the band -
Given Arne's 20 year history at The Plant, and his long list of album credits, you never know who will show up.

So far, Don Bassey, Vernon Black, Scott Petersen & Prairie Prince have stopped by. This week (11/30) we expect Chip Roland (known best for his work with Zero and the Faraway Brothers) and maybe a few more Zero alumni. Rumour has it that Judge and Lauren Murphy will join us tonight!

Margie keeps the fun flowing with beer, wine or a variety of juice and soda -
and some patrons bring snacks to share with new and old friends -
It's the best Tuesday night music party you're likely to find anywhere!

Admission is only $5 - We also have a collection box for our favorite local non-profit arts programs, for those who are willing and able to give a little more.

The Plant Studios and a Vehicle for Change continue to drive the preservation effort for The Plant's former Sausalito location. The goal is to preserve the music history in the building, and to bring it into a new era of creative service to the community as a non-profit music arts incubator : The Artsboreum.
"All my years at The Plant were never about money, they were always about finding new talent," states Frager, whose discography reads like a who's who in American pop music and jazz.
That said, we need to remember that the capital campaign is about the building, but our effort is not just about a building, it is about music.
So, every Tuesday night in San Rafael, Arne brings his band, Livin' Like Kings to the Belrose for an informal night of rehearsal, performance and jams with guest artists.

This Saturday afternoon, we start intense rehearsals for Thrill the World - Sausalito Saturday night, I'm singing a couple of tunes for Breastival .
Then, Sunday starts THRILL WEEK - for Thrill the World!
AND - TUESDAY NIGHT - Me & Livin' Like Kings start our "SOME KINDA BLUES" on Tuesdays at the Belrose in San Rafael. That is sure to be a fun way to spend an evening - please stop by - and check out the costume shop!
Re: Thrill the World - While my personal goal is to raise funding for the Artsboretum, Thrill the World - Sausalito is now available for any local non-profit to raise funds - through the power of music and dance! There is no required sign up fee for an organization to participate in our event and dancers choose which organization will benefit from their participation. If they don't see an organization on our list, they can enter their own. It's a really simple, fun and exciting way to make a difference. Non-dancers also have the opportunity to participate through the option to "adopt a zombie" and businesses can help us out and help market their business through our "be kind to zombies" discount program. It's a real community event.

Major kudos to the Sausalito Parks and Recreation department for keeping our event's operating costs very low, empowering more of the funding raised to go to charity. We couldn't do this in Sausalito without their generous support!

During the 2009 event, a bevy of boats anchored off the shore at Gabrielson and honked while our dancing zombies moved in sync. It was a blast, but a LOT of work because of the last minute registration process. Thankfully, that has been streamlined this year.
Rehearsal is also required to participate as a dancer. There are several opportunities to rehearse during "Thrill Week" - so sign up now!

It's a great honor to be able to donate my time and talents to these worthy causes - look forward to seeing you at one or more of these events!

Well, I've spent so much time working on my non-profit projects, that it took me more than SIX years to finally finish my own album and get this CD out. West Marin - 10/09/2010 - Ranch Nicasio - a completely different vibe and a completely different show - The "King" of the Rancho Nicasio All Stars - the wonderful Mike Duke appears on "Can't Go Back"- so we could not pass up the opportunity to do a show here for its release! Plus, Angela Strehli, known since the 80's as the "Queen" of the blues scene in Austin (Texas,) really deserves much of the credit for motivating me to start and finish this album, because six years ago, after I sat in on a few tunes with the All Stars, Angela called me the next day and said, "I feel as if we've discovered a treasure." I was so floored by her kindness, that I still get choked up to this day just thinking about it. We started production soon after that show.

The Music/Recording Industry has changed a lot since the golden days, but there is still a thirst for great music. Along with our efforts to preserve and restore a legendary recording studio space as our home base, think of us as a non-profit artist development company. Our ultimate goal is to find great artists and share them with the world. No, we aren't looking to be find the next fad - we're searching for true artists who will enrich our community with inspirational, groundbreaking works.

Once we find this talent, we'll share our knowledge and resources to cultivate artistry without concern for the marketplace, collaborate with like minded organizations and foster collaboration and utilize a network developed over 30+ years to expose these artists to new audiences.

The beauty and irony of this approach is that we believe true artistry will eventually find commercial success and become self sustaining.

Artsboretum is a grassroots non-profit effort founded by a musician; the absolute OPPOSITE of the old record label model. Our board members are unpaid volunteers, who agreed to join the Artsboretum movement because they love music and appreciate artistry.
You can join us by making a small donation or a pledge to help grow the Artsboretum. We strive to keep our operating costs low and our administrative costs under ten percent.
